Gisele Bundchen was born on July 20, 1980 in the town of Tres de Maio, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, to German immigrants Valdir Bundchen, a university teacher and Vania Nonnenmacher, a bank teller. She grew up in Horizontina.

At the age of 14, she was spotted by an elite model scout in São Paulo on a school trip, after which she entered the “Elite Look of the Year” competition and won second place.

She participated in the “Elite Model Look” world competition in Ibiza, Spain. She came in fourth and went to São Paulo to pursue a modeling career.

She traveled to New York in 1996 and made her New York Fashion Week runway debut.

Her haute couture break came in 1997 when she attended Alexander McQueen’s Spring 1998 “Rain” ready-to-wear show in London, titled “Body”.
