Education

1978 – Harvard Law School: Juris Doctor – top studentWhile at Harvard, Sussman worked as a legal researcher for Tribe, Professor Bell, and Associate Justice Stephen Breyer of the Supreme Court, and as an attorney for prison inmates in state prisons.

1975 – Amherst College: BA in Economics, Slavic Studies and Philosophy – top student

1971-72 – University of Chicago: majored in Economics and Slavic Studies.

Employment background

1986-present: Sussman & Associates, formerly Sussman & Watkins, formerly the law firm of Michael H. Sussman & Sussman. The company specializes in civil rights and the constitution. During this time, I have defended approximately 300 cases in the Federal Circuit, the vast majority of which are in the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, and served as lead counsel in more than 1,000 civil rights and complex criminal cases.

1981-1986: Assistant General Counsel, NAACP Country Office. Sussman represents the NAACP’s state office in litigation against a full suite of civil rights cases across the United States. Beginning in May 1981, Sussman served as the NAACP Yonkers Chapter and approximately Lead attorney for the class of 40,000.

1978-1981: Trial Attorney, Civil Rights Division [CRD], U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, D.C. Sussman brought school segregation and housing discrimination cases for CRD, including school desegregation cases in Charleston (SC), Chicago, Cleveland, and Indianapolis, as well as in Mobile, Alabama, Boston, Detroit and St. Louis. He received the “Distinguished Service to the Department of Justice” award from the Attorney General in 1980 and 1981.

Related activities

Sussman has published law review articles and has given numerous speeches and lectures on civil rights and the Constitution. Sussman also offers continuing legal education courses in special education and civil rights litigation through Lorman Educational Services and the Finkelstein LLP CLE program in Orange County, New York.
