Oliver Daemen just made history by becoming the youngest space traveler.

The Dutch teenager joined Amazon and Blue Origin founders Jeff Bezos, Bezos’ brother Mark and pilot Wally Funk on Tuesday on Blue Origin’s New Shepard spacecraft, which carried human passengers for the first time ever.

Daemen, 18, was Blue Origin’s first paying customer — he bid for the seat at an auction last month and lost to an anonymous bidder who paid $28 million. But Blue Origin said in a blog post on Thursday that Daemen would fly in the passenger’s place after a “schedule conflict”.

In a video posted to Twitter before the launch, Daimen said he was “super excited” about going into space.

“I’ve been dreaming about it all my life,” he said. “I’m so excited to experience zero gravity and see the world from a height.”

Daemen is the son of Joes Daemen, CEO of a private equity firm

Joes Daemen founded Somerset Capital Partners, a real estate private equity firm, in 2005. The company is located in Osterwijk, the Netherlands.

Daemen was involved in the auction and had already secured a seat on Blue Origin’s second flight, but when the auction winner was delayed, the company “got him up,” according to CNBC. Daemen’s father paid for the seat, but the company has not disclosed how much he paid, according to CNBC.

He will be a freshman in the fall

According to Blue Origin, Daemen graduated high school in 2020 with a gap year – starting this September, he will study physics and innovation management at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

He is a fan of underwater adventures and water sports

If Daemen’s Instagram account is any indication, he spends most of his free time on the water. Over the years, he has posted photos of himself snorkeling, surfing and water skiing.

He rubbed shoulders with Dutch celebrities

Daemen posted a photo of him, his sister, DJ Martin Garrix and Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen on his Instagram account in 2018.

He is fascinated by flight and outer space

According to Blue Origin, Daemen spent his gap years earning his pilot’s license, and the trip to space was the culmination of a lifelong interest.

“Flying on the New Shepard will fulfill a lifelong dream of Oliver, who has been fascinated by space, the moon and rockets since he was four years old,” the company said.
