Bull rider dies in ‘freak’ accident during race
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A Brazilian bull rider got caught on a rope Sunday, pulled him under the bull, and the bull stepped on his chest, according to Professional Bull Rider Tours.
Professional Bull Riders spokesman Andrew Giangola said 22-year-old Amadeu Campos Silva was taking part in a bull speed circuit at the Save Mart Center in Fresno. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Campos Silva lost his balance and his spurs got stuck on the flanking belt, which wrapped around the Bulls’ lower torso to encourage it to fight back. In an “unusual accident,” Giangola said, Campos Silva was pulled under a bull, which then stepped on his chest.
The Fresno County coroner’s office confirmed Campos Silva’s cause of death, but has yet to determine a cause of death.
Despite the tragedy, the bull will still be eligible for a future event called “Classic Man,” Giangola said. The Bulls were not wrong, he said.
“It was clearly not an act of aggression,” he said. “The Bulls bucked the trend in his normal pattern.”
“A promising bull rider,” Campos Silva said at the 2020 Pro Bull Rider World Finals after making his U.S. debut the previous year. He is pursuing his dream to support his family.
“He’s a determined cowboy,” Giangola said.
