Engma marries fourth wife

Writer, composer and director Mbongeni Ngema will tie the knot with Ukhozi FM DJ Nonhlanhla Mroza Buthelezi.

The couple, who announced their engagement in 2009, will hold a traditional engagement ceremony, Umkhehlo, on Saturday at Buthelezi’s home in Dokodweni, northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The date of the wedding – which will be one of the most talked about weddings of the year – will be announced at the traditional ceremony.

The guest list includes Attorney General Jeff Radebe, maskandi legends Thokozani Langa and Mfiliseni Magubane, kwaito musician L’Vovo, Tizozo, professor and Sama nominee Sosha, among others.

The ceremony is to present gifts and cash to the bride before the wedding.

Buthelezi, one of Ngema’s four fiancées, took time out from Ukhozi FM’s lunchtime show to prepare for her big day.

Ngema, creator of the award-winning musical Sarafina, will also marry Nompumelelo Gumede, Saleha Nxumalo and Cat Mpanza in a separate wedding on an as yet unannounced date.

Ngema has three wives – Pretoria National Theatre CEO Xoliswa Ngema, actress Cebisile Mpungose and Yesterday’s star and former generation actress Leleti Khumalo. He divorced all of them.

Buthelezi said yesterday that she has no problems in a polygamous marriage because she respects the culture and appreciates the way things were done in the past.

“I believe a man can have multiple wives, which is why I have no shame in entering a polygamous marriage,” she said.

Buthelezi is currently “in hiding” until the day of the ceremony as she is not allowed to leave the room she currently shares with the bridesmaids.

The 35-year-old bride said more than 300 guests were expected to attend the ceremony.

“The menu includes all the traditional dishes, from samp, pap, fresh meat, madumbi to sweet potatoes, and lots of things to eat and drink,” she said.

Buthelezi also previewed her outfit for the day. “It’s a traditional outfit made of real cowhide leather, a traditional Zulu hat (Inhloko), colorful beaded necklaces and bracelets.”
